Walls so smooth the light stops arguing.

Alisado de paredes y techos — hablamos español.

Paint doesn't hide a bad wall — it advertises it. Skim coating is a thin layer of joint compound spread across the whole surface, then sanded flat, so texture, patch marks and old repairs disappear before the first coat goes on. It's the least glamorous thing we do and the reason our finished rooms look the way they do.

Why it matters

Patching fixes a hole.
Skim coating fixes the wall.

La diferencia está en la preparación.

Spot-patching leaves a wall made of islands — each repair a slightly different flatness and porosity from everything around it. Paint dries and every one of them shows up under side light, especially in South Florida rooms with big windows and low afternoon sun.

  • Removes old texture, roller stipple and generations of patchwork in one pass
  • Gives the whole surface one consistent porosity, so the finish coat dries evenly
  • The right fix after popcorn removal, wallpaper removal or drywall repair
  • Makes flat and matte finishes possible — the sheens that show every flaw

Skim coating questions, answered.

Preguntas frecuentes.
What exactly is skim coating?
A thin layer of joint compound spread over an entire wall or ceiling and sanded flat. It's different from patching, which only fills a specific hole. Skim coating resurfaces everything so the whole plane is consistent.
Do I need it, or will paint cover the problem?
Paint follows the surface underneath it — it doesn't level anything. If you can see roller stipple, old texture, patch outlines, or waves under side light, paint will make those more obvious, not less, especially in a flat or matte sheen.
How much does skim coating cost?
It depends on the square footage, how many coats the surface needs, and the condition it starts in. We quote in writing after a free walkthrough, and new customers currently get 20% off.
How long does it take?
Each coat has to dry before the next, so a room usually takes two to three days including sanding and priming. Humidity affects drying time, which is a real factor in South Florida and something we plan around.
Is it dusty?
Sanding creates dust — that's unavoidable. We control it: rooms sealed off, surfaces covered, and dust vacuumed rather than swept into the air. It's the part of the job where care shows most.
Can you skim coat over popcorn texture?
Sometimes, but usually the texture should come off first. Coating over heavy texture takes more material, more coats and more drying time than scraping it and skimming the flat surface underneath. We'll tell you which makes sense for your ceiling after seeing it.
Are you insured?
Yes — All County Painters is a fully insured residential painting company, and every job comes with a written workmanship warranty. We work on homes, condo units and residences inside HOA communities.
